Art with Power Tools: Boys Only: grades 6-8

Art + power tools = loads of fun! Campers will learn to use power tools safely and build 3D sculptures using power tools and materials destined for the landfill. We will explore a variety of wood-and-rope puzzle toys…. and then learn to build our own. Using our new power tool skills and safety knowledge, we will create a big piece to display in a public place! Come prepared to be outside each day under shade tents—We promise, we'll keep cool with plenty of water and squirt guns. Drop off and pick up take place at NHMU. This is an outdoor camp that will take place around the Museum site.

This camp takes place entirely at the Museum, with part of the day exploring the Museum, its exhibits and collections, while also participating in a wide variety of science, technology and engineering activities. The other part of the day will be spent outside with staff from Clever Octopus under shade tents. Art and Math projects like Rube Goldberg machines, designing papercut tessellations inspired by MC Escher, drawing the surroundings like Piet Mondrian, and creating a team water sculpture. We are offering two sessions of this camp; the Boys Only session starts with Museum staff and ends their day with Clever Octopus staff. The Girls Only session begins with Clever Octopus staff and ends with Museum staff. Drop off and pick up take place at NHMU.

Robots v. Aliens: ages 9-12

Spend a week making your own action packed sci-fi flick. Team up with Spy Hop and Clever Octopus to design and create your costume, storyboard your action scene, and film yourself and your peers using green screen and After Effects to create the ultimate robot and alien battle! Morning drop-off is at Spy Hop, afternoon pickup at Clever Octopus. Transportation between sites is provided.

Junkquestra: ages 9-12

In this collaboration between Clever Octopus and Spy Hop, you will make found object instruments, use them to create original songs, and record them for the world to hear. You will spend the morning at Clever Octopus building instruments from everyday objects and “junk” that you discover in the craft shop. Then, you will bring those custom instruments to Spy Hop studios to learn about the process of making and recording songs. You will have hands-on experience in songwriting, crafting, Pro Tools and Ableton software, and various recording techniques. Morning drop-off is at Clever Octopus, afternoon pickup at Spy Hop. Transportation between sites is provided.

Explore flight, movement, and structural engineering using found materials and creatively reusing them to construct and launch hot air balloons, build and race junk-mobiles, and design sturdy bridges from weak and wobbly components! Creative Construction: Art and Engineering - U of U Campus Camps: Ages 11-13

Get creative in this artistic problem solving adventure! Explore the intersection of math and art with the magic of fractals with Sierpinski triangles, then use your new triangle skills to build strong, tall towers from flimsy materials you might otherwise think of as trash. You will even build a drawing machine from reusing cardboard to make our tiny sketches larger than life. Co-sponsored with Clever Octopus.
